The Create Jobs for USA fund has surpassed $1 million in donations for a new small business lending program since its Nov. 1 launch. That's equal to 200,000 of the red, white and blue "Indivisible" wristbands BDA is suppling Starbucks for the Create Jobs movement.

For the effort, Starbucks teamed with Opportunity Finance Network—a nationwide network of 180 Community Development Financial Institutions—to oversee the new fund and provide financing to community businesses in underserved markets. Contributions will be awarded as small business loans to create and sustain jobs in underserved markets.

"It's inspiring to see Americans coming together to play a role in helping create and sustain jobs," said Starbucks chairman, president and CEO Howard Schultz. "Since launching this initiative less than two weeks ago, concerned citizens are already making a difference in helping get Americans back to work. We are optimistic that this initial response will continue through the holidays and into 2012."

Since Nov. 1, $6 million has been donated to the fund, including $5 million in seed money from Starbucks. According to Starbucks and OFN, a $5 donation will spark roughly $30 in financing from community lenders, totaling $35 in small business loans and possibly $42 million in small business funding.

Currently, 28 OFN-member CDFIs have received grants, and the network anticipates loans to small businesses will begin by Dec. 1. OFN estimates that for every $3,000 in donations, or every $21,000 in loans, a new job will be created or retained.

"We're pleased to see that this initiative has tapped into the American spirit of people helping one another," said OFN president and CEO Mark Pinsky. "CDFIs have always served low-income, low-wealth, and disadvantaged communities, and with these generous donations, (they) can expand their reach to make a bigger difference—and create more jobs—in communities across the U.S."

Donations are being accepted online at www.CreateJobsforUSA.org and 7,000 U.S. Starbucks stores.
