I learned everything about trend analysis, selling and designing by actually doing it on the ground floor.

AlannaProduct Development

How did you get started in the merchandise industry?

I actually started as a graphic designer at Sun Sportswear and later got into merchandise through Seattle Cotton Works, a retail apparel company. The owner really gave me my start and taught me so much about the business. I Iearned everything about trend analysis, selling and designing by actually doing it on the ground floor.

What's changed over the years?

Trends are always changing, along with the extent of sophisticated, retail-level brands within the ASI marketplace. There's so much more available than just promotional products now.

What's your secret for staying up to date with the latest product trends?

Shop, shop, shop! You've got to see what's in the marketplace by reading magazines and scanning websites, blogs and anything else I can get my hands on. Also, it's important to talk to the people who are buying our products to gauge what they need.

What are a few of the oddest products you've seen lately?

Scented balls. Yep, I said it. Use your imagination.

What types of products will be in high demand in 2011?

Anything electronic, retail-oriented brands and fashion hats are on the top of our lists. But it really depends on the target demographic and the industry.

How do you kick-start the creative process?

Chocolate and lots of it. It's amazing how many great ideas come out of sugar rush.

Where/when do you do your best thinking?

While I'm running and working out. You can come up with some wild ideas while you're in serious pain.

What makes a savvy product developer?

Being a true merchandiser. Understanding your business from not only an aesthetic point of view, but a business perspective too. Understanding who you are selling to and what their needs are. The best developers realize it's a mix of art and science. You can create the most beautiful product, but if it doesn't sell or isn't profitable, it really doesn't do you any good.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

That's easy—my team. They're truly one of the most talented teams I have had the privilege to work with ever in my career. I also enjoy the ability to see so many different types of product. This job allows me to see so much, which is cool because I'm kind of a product girl at heart.

What are your passions outside of work?

Hanging with my super-cool 13-year-old. The love of my life!

Alanna
